Based on votes from Facebook users, Invisible Children received the grand prize, and To Write Love On Her Arms (TWLOHA) was one of five runner-ups who will receive $100,000. Leaders of both organizations have participated in the Young Leaders panel at previous Gathering conferences.

The Best Thing About Orphanges

orphanages_s.jpgDuke University recently revealed some surprising results in their study of orphaned children in developing countries. Contrary to popular belief, the study revealed that children raised in orphanages were no worse in their health, emotional and cognitive functioning, and physical growth than those cared for in their communities by relatives, and performed better than those raised in foster-care situations. Such results may be linked to the fact that orphanages offer advantages that many children today don't get-a sense of security, permanence and home.
